Roger's story

Welcome to my About Me page. I’m Dr. Roger Avila—a Cuban-born Canadian dentist, author, father, and entrepreneur. My journey has been filled with challenges, victories, and life-changing lessons that shaped who I am today.

Dr. Roger Avila’s roots belong to Holguín, Cuba, a small, lively town filled with colour and music. He arrived in Canada with only a single suitcase in the year 2000 with the goal to study dentistry at the University of Toronto. But the path to his goal was not easy, and to reach up there, he worked really hard. He sold candy apples by the beach, washed dishes and waited tables, then his adaptability took him to a marketing company where he worked with clients like the Shopping Channel, ultimately finding his place as a dental assistant.

All these hardships didn’t distract him from his goal because he believes that hard work can take you far and every setback gives you a lesson for life. Therefore,  he started earning bread in the morning, attended ESL classrooms at night and eventually got admission to the dentistry department at the University of Toronto.

After graduation, he returned to the clinic, where he was once an assistant – and, a year later, opened his own practice. Today, he proudly leads three dental offices, making thousands of Canadians smile with confidence.

Beyond his professional achievements, Roger is a dedicated father, a fond coin collector, a salsa enthusiast and a cryptocurrency merchant. He loves spending time with his sons and his wonderful girlfriend, embracing the thrill of life with enthusiasm.

Why he started writing?

Life’s storms don’t come with an instruction manual. Divorce, in particular, is more than a legal process—it’s an emotional tsunami that can knock you off your feet. Drawing on his own divorce and countless conversations with friends, family and patients, Dr. Avila wrote Before the Tsunami: a common-sense guide to help you prepare for, survive and recover from the chaos of separation.

At 51, Roger reflects on his life’s journey, acknowledging both triumphs and challenges. His personal experience with divorce—a period he considers his most significant trial—taught him the value of resilience and the importance of moving forward. This profound experience inspired him to write Before the Tsunami“, a candid guide aimed at helping others navigate the complexities of divorce with clarity and strength.

Roger’s favourite sayings, “It is what it is” and “Let’s make it happen,” encapsulate his pragmatic and proactive approach to life. Through his work, he aims to empower others to face life’s storms head-on and emerge stronger on the other side.
